Garden on a Roll

Schools

Garden on a roll is proud to announce that we are now working closely with The Green Fingers Charity, a fabulous charity raising money to create gardens for children’s hospices. We are giving a donation for every school’s border sold.

We are also offering various borders specific to attracting wildlife to school grounds.

”I have always been passionate about wildlife and what better way to encourage kids to do their bit for the environment than getting them out of the classroom planting their very own butterfly border!” says Antony.

These borders are ideal for the beds around the classrooms so that kids can see the butterflies from inside too.

We are offering berrying plants that can be planted around the boundary that are attractive to wildlife.

Birds lack nesting sites so these borders will contain many dense evergreen shrubs ideal for dunnocks, robins, thrushes, blackbirds and various finches.

Many schools now have gardening clubs so the parents could get involved too!
We will also soon be offering bird feeders and bird boxes and doing everything possible to encourage schools to be greener and more wildlife friendly.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has commissioned research revealing that children attending schools that encouraged gardening became more resilient, confident and healthier. The study which involved 1300 teachers and 10 schools demonstrates the power of a school garden as an effective teaching tool.

Also, researchers at the National Foundation for Educational Research found that teachers who used gardening as part of learning saw an improvement in children’s readiness to learn. The report revealed that the outdoor classroom encouraged children to become more active in solving problems as well as boosting literacy and numeracy skills. So if your school doesn’t yet have a garden, perhaps it’s time to consider an outdoor learning environment!

Antony Henn is available for a personal consultation and would be happy to come talk about wildlife and gardening at your school.
